Great Potential Student - Mount Vernon High School 2004 Gold Medalist in the NAACP ACT-SO Competition

 

Investor's Corner
Great Potential received Legislative funding from the NYS Assembly, Westchester County Majority Delegation, in the amount of $11,500. Great Potential also received member item funding through Senator Suzi Oppenheimer's office for program activities for the Great Potential Summer Academy Alumni. Senator Ruth Thompson also allocated $2,000 towards Great Potential tutoring. In December 2002, the Great Potential Program received a grant from JP Morgan Chase in the amount of $10,000 to support Leadership Development. In January 2004, Great Potential received Invest in Kids Funding in the amount of $50,000 to help support the program’s expansion to Peekskill Middle School and Alexander Hamilton Middle School in Elmsford. It also provided continued support to middle and high school sites in New Rochelle and Ossining.

Fall 2004 – Great Potential Annual Job Shadow
28 middle school students from the districts of Greenburgh, Tarrytown, Peekskill and Ossining participated in Great Potential’s Annual Job Shadow Day held at Purchase College, State University of New York. In brief, the reunion opened up with a special dinner. Amongst the attendees were Great Potential students, counselors, and parents. Spring 2004 – Senior Recognition Ceremony at PepsiCo
Great Potential Seniors were honored and enjoyed breakfast catered for them by PepsiCo. Many thanks to Ramona Barksdale who helped to facilitate the event. Our students received lovely pen sets and caps from PepsiCo and Deluxe Dictionary sets from Great Potential. More...

Spring 2004 In Courage, LLC 1st Annual “Rise” Seminar
Great Potential and In Courage LCC held its first multimedia seminar entitled "R.I.S.E" (Realistic, Inspirational, Strategies for Everyday Living) at Purchase College last spring. Great Potential Pride
98% Graduation rate in 2004! - The Great Potential Program has a 98% graduation rate of 40 active seniors who graduated from high school, many of whom will attend college and enter the workforce. Keep up the good work!

A College/Career Center@ Mount Vernon High School has opened to GP Students. This room houses reference materials and resources provided by College Board and ScholarShop. Take Advantage!

College Basketball record broken! WPHS Great Potential Alumnus Hassan Washington, attending Queens College broke the record for number of assists in a college basketball game. It is now set at a high of 18 assists. Great Job!

Site Director’s Spotlight! - Former Site Director Mr. Michael Feinberg of WPHS received a plaque for 10 years of dedication and service in Spring 2004. Ms. Allison Maguire of ALMS worked hard in coordinating the Aggressive Learning Workshops held at her school and did an excellent job. Ms. Sheila Foley of the White Plains Youth Bureau has been very active with her students and supportive of our efforts to update this website by submitting information regarding field trips and events as well as pictures. We thank you all!

Great Potential Student Spotlight! - MVHS student Janet Maddox, winner of the 2004 NAACP-ACTSO regional gold medal award in playwriting, is well on her way to college. She will be traveling to Chicago to attend a consortium of colleges where she will have the opportunity to interview, audition and meet with college recruiters from all over the country.
